ARTIST'S STATEMENT - SHORT
GALA SORKINA

My work includes a variety of genres and media, such as ceramic and porcelain sculptures, functional and decorative pieces of fine china, underglaze and overglaze china paintings and painted ceramic tiles. Creating a new piece, I always feel that it is not only me, but the piece itself which demands its own medium and technique. A lot of my works, however, are executed in porcelain. I like the shine and whiteness of this material, as well as almost unlimited possibilities it provides to an artist as a medium. I enjoy being a designer, sculptor, painter, architect, scenario writer and theatre director at the same time.

Lately, I have been focusing on various sculptural compositions. To some extent, this work is similar to the process of staging a play in a theatre. I try to make my work live in space, to assimilate and thus to transform its environment. A figure or a commonplace object (like a chair, for example) can become in my "theater" a character, a stage, or both at the same time.

Since my objects often become a theme for improvisations, I work in series. I think that one of the most common feature inherent in my works is an element of grotesque and irony. My works are meant to be interactive. I want them to communicate with the people they belong to in order to raise their spirits and to excite their imagination.
